Berachain History
Early Development and V1 Testnet (Artio)
Berachain began with the goal of combining EVM execution with Cosmos-based consensus to create a decentralized platform. The first major step was the launch of the V1 testnet, named Artio, built on the Polaris framework. This version integrated EVM and Cosmos, but limitations in scalability and performance became apparent as the network grew.
Key milestones during V1:
- Initial deployment of the EVM/Cosmos hybrid.
- Validator participation and early ecosystem development.
- Challenges with transaction throughput and engagement were identified.
V2 Testnet (bArtio) Launch: June 9th
On June 9th, Berachain launched the V2 testnet called bArtio. This version introduced BeaconKit, a new framework that separates the consensus layer from the execution layer, improving network performance and flexibility. Validators, such as 01node, transitioned from V1 to V2, continuing their active involvement in the network.
Key upgrades in V2:
- Introduction of BeaconKit for improved consensus handling.
- Enhanced scalability and performance.
- Modular client architecture allowing for EVM innovations and future updates.
